JAN 19, 2019: ROUEN  

A soaring Gothic cathedral and beautifully restored medieval quarter ~ Rouen, famously associated with the trial of Joan of Arc, is one of the gems of Normandy. TICKETS

 

FEB 16, 2019: BAYEUX

Visitors from around the world gaze at the Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered chronicle of the 1066 Norman invasion of Britain ~ a priceless artifact of the Middle Ages. TICKETS

 

MAR 16, 2019: CHARTRES

Step into this glorious cathedral, one of Western civilization’s crowning architectural achievements, and marvel at the intense blues of its incomparable stained glass. TICKETS

 

APR 13, 2019: TROYES 

We visit this lovely town on the Seine that has been an important crossroads since Roman times. Its half-timbered 16th century houses lend Troyes its cosy charm. TICKETS

 

MAY 11, 2019: REIMS

Reims is the traditional site of the crowning of the kings of France—and here, on May 7, 1945, General Eisenhower received the unconditional German surrender. TICKETS

 

JUN 8, 2019: ORLEANS

This city on the Loire sealed its place in history in 1429 when Joan of Arc rallied the armies of Charles VII and brought about a spectacular rout against the English. TICKETS

 

William H. Fredlund, the Director of the Institute, obtained his B.A. and M.A. from UCLA, where he specialized in European history and art history. He studied in Italy on a Fulbright Fellowship and completed a double Ph.D. in history and humanities at Stanford, specializing in Renaissance Italy. Dr. Fredlund has taught for UCLA, the University of Florence, Stanford, and UCSC Extension.
