The North York Moors is a 554-square foot upland area that was designated a national park in 1952. It is bordered to west by the Halbleton Hills, to the north by the Cleveland Hills, to the east by the North Sea, and to the south by the Tabular Hills and the Vale of Pickering. It is also home to one of our other recommended sites–Whitby Abbey (https://westernciv.com/whitby-abbey/). This park is an outdoorsman’s dream. There are so many ways that it can be explored–on foot, on bike, even on horse! There are many walking paths that can be enjoyed–on your own or with a guide, easy or challenging. Popular named walks include the Cleveland Way, which circles the moors and has a section along the coast; and the Lyke Wake Walk, which leads directly across the heart of the moors. You can choose your own adventure by downloading a personalized walking guide: https://www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/visiting/enjoy-outdoors/walking/our-walks. Some other activities the park offers are gliding, rock climbing, horseback riding, motor sports, and even geocaching. For those who appreciate some civilization, the park also has several small towns in and around it, including Helmsley, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside, Guisborough, Stokesley, Northallerton and Whitby.
