The Yorkshire Museum first opened its doors in 1830 and has been amazing its guests ever since. The main building was designed by William Wilkins in a Greek Revival style and is a Grade I listed building. The building is surrounded by botanical gardens known as the Museum Gardens. The gardens are famed for their fantastic collection of trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs set against the stunning backdrop of the medieval ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey. It is FREE to explore the gardens, whether you take a stroll or stop for a picnic. More info about the gardens can be found here: https://www.yorkmuseumgardens.org.uk. The museum itself is home to four permanent collections–geology, biology, astronomy (which includes an observatory in the Gardens), and archeology. In addition, there are several interesting artifacts on display, including the remains of a Roman woman that gives a peek into what life was like in 4th-century York. There are also a number of exhibitions that can change, so it is helpful to check the website ahead of time.
