This park was created in 1954 and contains most of the upland area of the Pennines in the historic county of Yorkshire. The majority of the park is in North Yorkshire, with a sizable area in Cumbria and a small part in Lancashire. It includes some of the finest limestone scenery in the UK, from crags and pavements to an underground labyrinth of caves. Walking or cycling are popular ways to explore the park, with the many walkways and cycleways. Visitors can admire the natural scenery–from flowers to waterfalls–or see the many villages, festivals, restaurants, and other attractions. The Dales Countryside Museum is housed in the converted Hawes railway station in Wensleydale in the north of the area, and there are five additional visitor centers.
